Every day, everywhere are reminders of the biggest natural disaster in Australian history. Blackened tree trunks, neighbours still living in caravans and the emotional scars etched into people’s faces. I will always respect and remember the losses that occurred that day. I will also be forever grateful for the friendships and opportunities that arose following this tragedy.

In the months after the fires, the women in our community exhibited exceptional strength and resilience, keeping families together, supporting communities and advocating for resources. So much good was happening and I really wanted to see the momentum continue. I teamed up with Jemima (who I didn’t know before the fires) to provide opportunities for women to connect. Women are pivotal in the family unit and when you look after the women, by extension, you look after children, men, families and communities.

With the love and support of lots of women in our community, we formed FIREFOXES - a dynamic, caring, inclusive organisation - that continues to grow.

Disaster recovery is a long, slow journey with great challenges and rewards. I feel blessed knowing that I am ‘on purpose’ and making a difference. Because of this experience, I am a better person, mother, wife and friend.
